A. palmatum Atropurpureum Group 5' 5' 5 shade Many Japanese cultivars. Finely dissected, deeply lobed leaves of bronze-purple. Brilliant fall display of red, orange, or yellow. Plant away from water in neutral to acid soil.
A. pseudoplatanus Brilliantissimum' 13' 10' 5 sun Shrimp pink young foliage turning to dark green in summer. Very slow growing.
A. rubrum Swamp maple, Red maple, or Canadian maple 130' variable 3 adaptable Clusters of tiny red flowers cover brances before ivy-shaped leaves appear. Vivid scarlet in fall if grown in acid soil. Will grow in marshy soil.
A. saccharinum Silver maple 100' 130' 3 sun Large deeply lobed leaves with silver underside. Good yellow color in fall. Dislikes moisture
A. saccharum Sugar maple 130' 100' 4 sun Considered to have the brightest fall color. Plant well away from water because of it's size.
Alnus cordata Italian alder 50' 33' 6 sun Bright yellow catkins in spring. Likes sun and wet soil conditions.
A. glutinosa Aurea' 80' 33' 2 semi-shade Cultivar of common alder. Bright yellow spring foliage. Slow growing. Requires moist soil.
A. incana Gray alder 65' 33' 2 semi-shade Useful for poorer soils. Catkins are tinted red. A.i. 'Laciniata' has deeply cut leaves.
A. rubra Red or Oregan alder 100' 65' 6 Shoots and buds are dark red. Profusion of long catkins in spring.
Andromeda polifolia Marsh rosemary 12" 12" 2 Evergreen plant for the bog or waterside. Requires moist acid soil with humus.
Betula nigra River or Black Birch 65' 33' 4 Neat growing tree for wet ground. Shaggy orange-pink and black peeling bark.
B. papyrifera Paper or Canoe birch 100' 65' 2 sun Quick growing. Serrated oval leaves turn clear yellow in fall.
B. pendula Silver birch or European white birch 100' 65' 2 sun Slender tree with pendulous habit. Grow singlely or in group. B.p. 'Golden Cloud' is smaller with finely dissected leaves.  Ideal for smaller garden.
Cephalanthus occidentalis Button bush 6 1/2' 6 1/2' 6 sun Fragrant cream flowers in late summer. Deciduous shrub needs rich slightly acidic moist soil.
Cornus alba Dogwood 10' 10' 3 sun Red stems provide fall and winter color. White flowers in spring. Cultivars include C.a. 'Aurea', C.a. 'Elegantissima', C.a. Spaethii', C.a. 'Sibirica'.
C. stolonifera Red osier 6 1/2' 6 1/2' 2 sun Vigorous, spreads rapidly by stolons. Prune hard for bright yellow or lime-green shoots. Works well with red stemmed dogwoods.
C. florida Flowering dogwood 33' 20' 5 sun Best if left to form natural shape. Requires neutral to acid soil. Vivid purple autumn color.
C. kousa, var. chinensis 23' 16' 5 sun Grown for white bracts surrounding the smallflower in late spring to early summer. Vase shaped, shrubby tree.
C. macrophylla 50' 50' 6 sun Tiny cream flowers in large clusters. Looks like snow dusting the branches in summer. Needs well drained soil.
Eucalyptus camphora Swamp gum 9 sun Not frost hardy. Can be stooled and grown as shrub.
E. globulus Tasmanian blue gum 9 sun Not frost hardy. Grown for peeling bark and silvery-blue juvenile leaves.
Eucryphia lucida 9 sun Not frost hardy. Erect bushy evergreen. Open cup shaped fragrant white flowers in summer. E.x nymansensis, 'Nymansay' will tolerate alkaline soil.
Illicium anisatum Star Anise 8 sun Not frost hardy. Conical shrub or small tree. Scented evergreen. White or pale green flowers appear in spring. Prefers neutral to acid soil.
Kalmia angustifolia rubra Sheep laurel 5' 5' 2 sun or semi-shade Saucer-shaped red flowers appear in summer for many weeks. Requires moist acid peaty soil and mulched with leaf mold or pine needles.
K. latifolia Calico bush or Mountain laurel 10' 10' 4 sun or semi-shade Culitvars have flower colors ranging from white to red and purple, often with red markings.
Nyssa aquatica Water tupelo 50' 25' 3 sun Requires acid to neutral soil.
N. sylvatica Swamp tupelo 50' 25' 3 sun Brilliant fall foliage.
Populus balsamifera Balsam poplar 100' 25' 2 sun Needs deeply cultivated soil with good drainage.
P. x candicans Balm of Gilead 50' 20' 2 sun Delicious odor in spring when leaf buds open.
P. nigra Black poplar 80' 65' 2 sun Shiney bronze leaves in spring that turn yellow in fall.
P.n. 'Italica' Lombardy poplar
P.n. 'Plantierensis' Disease resistant, bushier, and more robust than Lombardy poplar.
P. tremula Aspen 50' 33' 2 sun Slightest breeze will stir leaves into quivering motion.  Yellow fall foliage.
P.t. 'Pendula' Weeping aspen Same characteristics but weeping form.
Salix alba White willow 80' 33' 2 sun Fast growing and vigorous. S.a. var. sericea 'silver willow has a more silvery appearance. S.a. 'Britzensis'  (Scarlet willow) has bright orange-red new shoots.
S. babylonica Weeping willow 40' 40' 5 sun Graceful tree with weeping branches that can hang down to the ground. Do not plant too near pond, leaves can have toxic effect. Fine along streams or river.
S.b. var. pekinensis 'Tortuosa' Corkscrew willow 50' 50' 5 sun Upright spiralling branches and twisted green leaves.
S. caprea 'Kilmarnock' Pussy willow 6 1/2' 6 1/2' 5 sun Good by small ponds. Can be grown as a shrub.
S. purpurea 'Pendula' Purple osier 16' 16' 5 sun Good for small water gardens. Can be grown as tree or shrub.
S. elaeagnos ssp. Angustifolia Hoary willow 10' 16' 4 sun Gray leaves  with white undersides. Forms a dense clump of arching stems.
S. gracilistyla 10' 13' 6 sun Grown for its silky gray catkins with anthers that turn from red to yellow.
S.g. 'Melanostachys' Black willow 10' 13' 6 sun Grown for its black catkins that open to show red anthers.
S. irrorata 10' 16' 5 sun Dark purple shoots with white bloom for winter color. Prune hard for best display.
S. hastata 'Wehrhahnii' 3' 5' 6 sun Small spreading shrub with masses of silvery gray catkins.
S. reticulata Net-veined willow 4' 12' 3 sun Creeping habit on moist, fibrous soil.
S. 'Stuartii' 3' 6 1/2' 3 sun Slow growing spreading shrub. Has oval, gray, downy leaves.
S. udensis 'Sekka' 8' 8' 5 sun Grown by flower arrangers for curious flattened, purplish coiling stems.
Sorbus aria Whitebeam 40' 33' 5 sun Leaves have felted white undersides. Good contrast for neighboring trees.  Withstands winds.
S. aucuparia Rowan or Mountain ash 50' 25' 2 sun Attractive pinnate leaves. Bright red clustered fruits in fall.
Taxodium ascendens Pond cypress 80' 50' 7 sun Spreading slender branches with pale yew-like leaves.
T. distichum Swamp cypress 100' 75' 6 sun Has good conical shape.
Telopea truncata Tasmanian waratah 9 Not frost hardy. Crimson flowers against glossy deep green leaves.
Vaccinium macrocarpon American cranberry 18" 6 1/2' 6 sun A mat forming evergreen shrub. Requires acid soil.
